My family and I love everything that the Surrey countryside has to offer. Here is some of my personal background.
My first-full time job was as a professional rugby player with Saracens. Injury ended that career and allowed me to start on a new path.
Working for a Labour MEP in the European Parliament, we led on the Parliament’s input into a one billion euro aid programme to help developing nations trade in international markets.
My work on international trade continued when I joined the CBI to represent British business on multilateral and bilateral trade talks: meeting with key ambassadors at the WTO in Geneva, working on the detail of trade agreements with EU officials, and interfacing with British business to understand their needs.
I then continued this work in the climate change area: working with British business to help them adapt to be more climate resilient, and working with UK negotiators in the Copenhagen COP climate talks to provide the leading edge thinking from industry on how low-carbon technology could be shared around the world.
This work led to roles working on the detail of gas and electricity regulation, energy efficiency legislation and writing a code of practice to protect energy consumers.
After retraining to become a barrister I have taken on cases for nearly every trade union. Representing workers when they have been injured at work, discriminated against, unfairly dismissed, or when they are facing being struck off. Other recent cases involved the rugby brain injury litigation, the infected blood scandal, Grenfell, and nurses facing disciplinary allegations.
Since 2008 I have worked with a friend in The Gambia, West Africa to provide additional tuition to hundreds of students in rural areas, providing them with the boost they need to go on to further education or employment.
I am also the founder of Labour Society for Sport, the Labour Party’s first formal society to generate sports and recreation policy.
As a barrister I have represented members of most of the trade unions, whether they have been discriminated against, unfairly sacked or injured.
I am currently acting in a major lawsuit being brought by players against rugby’s governing bodies, and recently spoke on that subject in the European Parliament.
I worked with UK COP climate negotiators and leading businesses on how low carbon technology could be shared with the developing world. I also produced the CBI’s first ever guidance on how business could adapt to a changing climate.
My family love to enjoy the beach and sea swimming, that’s why I have and will campaign against water companies’ appalling abuse of our seas and waterways.
From engaging with the gas and electricity regulator Ofgem on the detail of small business related regulations, to working with the Department of Energy and Climate Change on the detail of energy efficiency legislation, to working with financial directors on the impact of policy, I have a depth of policy knowledge and experience.
